Re: K&N Filter install...was there REALLY a notable difference? (WeasleVette454)
I installed one on a 92 vette that I had and there definatley was a difference but the one I put on my 69 BB did not make any difference at all except to the thickness of my wallet.

Only way you'll notice anything is if the old filter has been on there for 5 years. Other than that another no from me. Maybe if you're running an outrageous 600HP motor or something then maybe you'll notice a difference.

Hot Rod magazine this month did a comparison test between a paper filter and various cleanable cotton mesh filters. Every one of the cotton mesh filters made roughly 7 to 10 hp more than the paper element filter.
Can you feel this by the seat of your pants? I doubt it. But it's one of those things that you can do to help. And every little bit helps.

Biggest difference I noticed was that my wallet was abt 40 bucks short..... . No comparison to the 40 bucks I spent on Lars' Recurve Kit........Now there was a great investment. :D :D :D
Re: K&N Filter install...was there REALLY a notable difference? (WeasleVette454)
I couldn't tell any difference in mine, even with the G-Tech. But, like the others said, it is washable.
Another question, has anyone tested those fuel magnets, the ones that clamp around your gas line? It supposedly uses a magnetic field, to break up fuel atoms for a cleaner burn. The manufacturer claims a mileage increase, but I think not. My concern is that even if it did work, wouldn't metallic junk collect where the magnet is, and trash the carb the instant it was removed?

I didn't really notice anything in my sb, but like "69" I did notice a major improvement to my '96 Explorer in terms of performance and especially mileage.

Funny you should mention the metal pieces. I bought a new fuel pump and ran out of fuel line so put my clear filter back in between the pump and carb to bridge the gap. Now I can see metal shavings in it. They may have been caught by the filters in my carb but i feel better I don't have to find out.

I have a blazer extreme, and i noticed a small difference, not necessarily in power(I can't notice anything off the line), but the throttle response seems a little cleaner. Not a lot, but every little bit helps with only 190 H.P.
Re: K&N Filter install...was there REALLY a notable difference? (WeasleVette454)
The Hot Rod article stated that the difference in hp between the various filters was within the range of error, thereby rendering the filters equal. And I don't remember the difference being 7-10 hp. I thought it was a lot smaller than that. Just the same, on a 3-400 hp engine, what's 7-10 hp? Very little. In Hot Rod's opinion, the normal parts store filter was every bit as good as the high dollar placebo units. The only potential difference, was that you'd have to replace the $5.00 filter every so often. I like keeping my money, so I'll stick with my Fram or AC Delco specials.

I think the only difference is that k+n "looks" cooler with an open air filter :p: and the money that a paper ones cost you would have to buy a hell of alot of them before adding up to the price of a k+n filter

Sounds like pure, unadulterated :bs to me. Heck, even :bs can make more power (methane). :)
