With that budget I would look at the Dart 400 SHP forged short block assembled by them. Then a set of AFR 195 eliminators with a Hydraulic roller. What differential gear and trans?

That budget will get you pretty much anything you want

Are you against the LSx engine because of the amount of fab work required, or because you want to keep the original "flavor" of the car? Understandable, but it is a very attractive swap in that price range.

Otherwise 63Mako's formula is about perfect - solid short block and great heads, and only a little "assembly required" that you can easily do yourself with basic tools, a little learning and some patience
