ok--I HAVE TO HAVE SIDEPIPES!!!!!!!!!!!---screw the emissions!!!!!!!!
i like the hooker, but what is the horror story (if any) about the chrome? will they turn blue? does anyone have any pics of the black ones? :seeya
If its just the sound you are after, save about a Grand and get yourself a set of Mid-America Chamber Exhausts ($299.99)....... I've got 'em and I am :D :D :D
I don't have any pics of my black sidepipes yet. I'll give you some reasons I went sidepipes.
1. The Sound, just awesome even with a basically stock L-48
2. The Heat, got it out from under my butt so the cabin is cooler
3. The look, it's subjective but I like the looks.
4. The Horsepower, until you get to 2.5 inch dual pipes and good mufflers
this combo makes a free flowing setup.
5. I could do it myself, I was having problems finding someone who would do an exhaust without the catalytic converter that didn't want options on my first born child.
The downside, cost for Hooker headers and Spiral turbo specialties side pipes and baffles just under $1000. The smog police, not here anymore but if I relocate could be a hassle. The paint that comes on the headers is poopie, strip it off and get some high heat paint. I used a Rustoleum product from my boiler parts supplier, so far so good.
Hope that helps.

erika1977.......I cut 2 small mini cats, about 12" long, in the horizontal part of the side pipe where it goes to the side of the car after leaving the exhaust manifold. There is just enough room there. To give a little more room, I used a block hugger header, cut the side pipe, weilded in the cats and installed the pipes. It really was not all that bad and once I painted the pipes and cats high heat black, you can not even see them, but I am a legal eagle with the state smog police :D

hi woodwrker--i had to take my taurus to the emission test today, and while i was there i asked the guy what will they be looking for--he told me on a 77, they will check vibration on rear of car, and put the probe into my exhaust (be it side pipes or whatever) i asked him about the cats and he said i should have no problem with out them, and if it dosent pass then i should lean the carb out some :seeya
erika......I would call your motor vehicle dept. and ask if a cat is mandatory in the state. My car would probably pass the blow test even without the cats, but on the visual inspection to look for the cat, if they were not there I would fail regardless if the car blew zeros. In Arizona for my car cats and EGR are mandatory!!! I hate the smog police :(
