Default Trans tunnel insulation

With summer coming I decided it was time to replace the missing trans tunnel insulation. After taking out the console and making a mess, I figured out that it goes in from under the car. How hard is it to install? Are the clips something I will need special tools for? Should I let the mech handle it? Anything that I should know before I start? Any advice will be appreciated.

It needs to be installed from underneath. If you drop the driveshaft and pull the dip stick tube (auto), disconnect the shift linkage you can slide it in from the rear. It is held in place with clips. Take a look at the AIM for your year and the layout is fairly clear. Honestly, the time to put it in is with the trans out. It does help in heat into the cabin.

Another suggestion is to plug all the holes in the firewall. Pull your seats and carpet and put in the Astro foil insulation. The difference is unreal in the cabin temps.

It installs from underneath, held in by a number of dual prong clips which are riveted to the underside of the car. The insulation, after being put in the proper position, is pushed over these VERY sharp prongs, then the prongs are bent over. I have serious reservations that you can install this insulation with the trans in the car. Many resort to cutting it in half lengthwise to get it in. Hope this helps. Chuck
