Default Correct coil resistance

The previous owner put on Accel Point Eliminator with MSD Coil. I find out that the Accel requires 1.4 ohms resistance on the primary side of the coil and the MSD coil has a 0.7 reisitance. I want to change back to the original coil and wonder what the resistance the the Delco coil is. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction to research.

are you sure they dont mean the primary side wire coming from the ignition has to have 1.4 ohms resistance versus the coil having resistance? Can you provide a link to where you found this information?

I think the lower coil resistance is OK. If it was higher then the Eliminator specs you would have a problem.

Your probably right. I spoke with both Accel and MSD and frankly I wasn't clear after I hung up. Accel indicated their point eliminator needed a 1.4 ohms resistance on the primary side. (?) The MSD blaster was for 0.7 resistance. What I'm trying to do is figure out if the new Delco coil (stock to a 68 327) will work the accel points or not. If not that's ok and I'll buy a new point eliminator which will work with the delco coil.

Before you spend any more money, get some useful information from the Accel tech line. Ask them what the maximum safe primary current level is with their module. (It would be nice to know what primary clamping voltage the switching transistor is designed at, but I'm not holding my breath that they would know that detail on their own product.) Then it's a fairly easy deal to do the math to determine what ballast resistance you need with whatever coil you are using to keep the current under that limit.

Find out what they tell you, and report back. We'll help you.

Tom, the 1968 327/300 and 327/350 engines (with standard ignition) both used the 1115270 coil (stamped 270 B-R) and was rated at 1.8 ohms. However, as with any electronic device, the factory accepted tolorances were between 1.77 and 2.05 ohms.

To check what you currently have, connect an ohm meter between the negative terminal and the positive terminal on the coil and you should (hopefully) get something in that range.

Ed, thank you. I held off on buying replacement points but did buy a new correct coil. When I get it I'll check. The MDS Blaster that was in the car didn't fit the bracket and the original one appears to be worn out. At that point with what Accel told me I'll have to put some kind of resistor on, I'm guessing.

I have a fairly new Oreilly Stock coil for my 69. it reads 2.3 ohms terminal to terminal.
