hey i just checked my mailbox, and the new corvette central catalog came today.........they have a rack & pinion steering set up in there--have any of you guys used this set-up? any comments on it? :seeya
tell me about it LOL!!!!!!!!!!!
i have to replace my steering cylinder, and when i saw the R&P set-up, i was going nuts!!!!!!!! DOES THE WISH LIST EVER END?!!!!!!!!!!
Yes I installed it on my 76 body off project. It is the Steeroids kit by the looks of it. Very nice kit. Easy to install. Nicely engineered. "eric" (burners) on the forum here can answer all questions.
What's the advantage of this system, and what exactly does it replace? My power steering system is shot, and I'll have to replace or rebuild everything, so if this system offers a big improvement, then I may as well consider it....
Pedro, I think it greatly worth it, fine setup....of course you can do your own for about 200 bux, but you gotta make the brackets and linkages yourself...
if you feel you can't fabricate, or get a buddy to help, with junkyard parts...maybe buying the kit is the right idea....
by the time you buy all the parts to do your present stock setup correctly...
from steering knuckles through input box....you can spend about 700 bux easily...depending on the condition of your input box the recirculating ball gearbox with the pitman arm on it....
Seems that there're mixed opinions about the system... I think when I add up the cost of rebuilding/replacing everything, it won't be much less than the price of this rack and pinion system, so if that thing is good, I may go for it. Does it replace the steering box as well?
I finished installing this kit almost a month ago and absolutely love it. I think it is worth every penny. My steering was 31 years old and it showed. If you are not concerned w/ originality and have to spend some bucks to get your steering in shape. Why not? It's lighter, improved response and lock to lock, easy to install and not much more that rebuilding the entire system w/ stock parts.
How easy is the installation? The Corvette Central catalog says no drilling or welding is required and that 3 hours should be sufficient; is that true? It's hard to believe it can be that easy...
71stingraybigblock, do tell! A few of us have been waiting for more first hand information about the rack. I fully expect the steering to be better than any stock C3 system. How is the response and tight ratio?
I have one for my car, but I can't put it in without my new engine (the current engine doesn't have a PS pump :()
As I mentioned before my steering steering was very stock and original. I had a lot of play in the wheel and driving down I-70 at 70 mph was scary and required a great deal of attention. When I took the vette to be aligned the tech commented to me about the tightness and ratio. He was impressed. I myself absolutely love it. The new streering response and feel have greatly improved my driving pleasure. I have driven many c3's including some w/ entirely new stock steering systems and they in no way compare to the steeroids system. I especially like the ratio, great improvement and much less steering. It resonds quickly. And down the highway there are no more battles to keep her on the road. Point and go. I can now enjoy the sound of big block power cruising at high speed instead of worring about crashing into the car next to me. You will be satisfied.
