I consider myself a near expert on your power source question. I had my 6A box fry about a month ago because the previous owner used the + side of the alternator for the 12v power source. Unfortunately, his choice was a power source that peaked as the voltage regulator does to power the system...thus frying my 6A box. Actually, it fried a couple of diodes in it. Regardless, I had to shell out $159 plus a trip to the Jegs showroom in Columbus cause the WeasleVette was stranded. Any other time a trip to Jegs woulda been cool...but not that day.
My 12v power source is located at the starter solenoid, which is, of course, a direct connection to the battery. I bought a 24" battery cable that had eyelets at both ends to extend the positive cable from the MSD box to the solenoid.
I have my box mounted behind the right valance panel behind the wheel, under the radiator overflow container. Away from heat, and out of sight. The length of all the other wires common to the MSD box was sufficient. It has given me no problems.
