Default Several questions 1978

The new guy again.
1. How much condensation should build in these hooker pipes, in two or three days? Enough to drip out? New pipes, garage kept in southern VA.
2. What is the Clear Plastic stirp for in the door jam, latch side?
3. What are the jack points on the car, for a floor jack?
4. Does the rear end sink on all 78's when put in gear? New tranny and new motor. It sinks when I go to gear vice P or N.
5. I still have not gotten the answer to how to get the center console out? WHere the shifter numbers are, the wood grain is pealed off, I want to strip it and just paint it.

That is a start of my list, car runs GREAT! I just put a new K&N filter in it, can not believe engine builder never mentioned it's filth, thanks in advance.

4. I have a '79 and replacing the front differential bushing helped the squat dramatically. Here is a link to one http://www.cssbinc.com/63-79rearcrossmember-1.aspx
Mine was so old the bolt was loose after most of the deteriorated rubber fell off.

Ya know what you need? An AIM! Assembly Instruction Manual, they are year specific, and are basically the instructions for the guys who worked on the assembly line building these cars. And maybe a Chilton's or Haynes manual. If you don't have any of these, ya can't imagine how awesome it is to have the info right at your fingertips in a book.

Take the carpet panels off on either side. there are a couple of screws that you'll find that hold them on. Then you can access the panel you are wanting to remove and remove the screws underneath it that hold it on. I think there are 4 of them. You may or may not need to remove the shifter boot's 4 screws. You'll still have to deal with the vent controls

Condensation...it depends on the weather now and what it was like when you drove it last. Drip out when you start it? yeah that's pretty normal.

My '81 drops it's butt when I put it in gear.

I put the floor jack just behind the front and just in front of the rear tires.

Well I may not offer anything new over what others have shared but it may form a consensus that you'll get the idea.

Clear plastic stripe? Sounds like an extra...can you post a picture?

3. What are the jack points on the car, for a floor jack?

It's pretty straight forward on a C3 in contrast to a C5. On the rear, there are actually a plate that is reinforcing cross welded plate where the frame turns inward away from the rear tire...I use it. In the front, I use the frame as it turns inward from to avoid the front tire. I avoid the frame rail where the body comes down over it on the side.

4. Does the rear end sink on all 78's when put in gear
When I drove my 78 for the first time in 1993, that feel was characteristic of what I had grown up with in the late 60's driving muscle cars...quite normal. Not to say that this 78 is muscle but its the typical transfer of power from motor to differential.

5. I still have not gotten the answer to how to get the center console out? WHere the shifter numbers are, the wood grain is pealed off, I want to strip it and just paint it.
Assuming your describing the driver's center console and not the center instrument cluster, and once the carpet side panels are removed, it has two screws at the rear that attach to the brake cover; two screws on the side toward rear; two screws at the front that attached it to the center instrument cluster and two on the front side. Once its loose than you have to get up underneath to remove, a/c-heat switch, cigarette lighter, power window switches. And don't forget the transmission ****.

As suggested, you'll need to pick up a 78 AIM (assembly instruction manual) that details the parts, screws, etc and show how they are assembled.

I do not know. I don't have side pipes.

...2. What is the Clear Plastic stirp for in the door jam, latch side?...
Post a pic. It might be the door guard.

...3. What are the jack points on the car, for a floor jack?...
About the same as with the car jack. Owner's manual shows the jacking points.

...4. Does the rear end sink on all 78's when put in gear? New tranny and new motor. It sinks when I go to gear vice P or N....
Posi will squat a little. Check the curb idle to be sure it is where it is supposed to be.

There is no wood grain in a 78. Sounds like an aftermarket trim kit has been installed. The assembly instruction manual (AIM) shows how the console and goodies were assembled. The shifter numbers are on the console trim plate next to the shifter.

Here's a Pace Car. Your console will look the same without the PC trim plate.

Thanks to all, I will post a pick of the clear plastic door guard.
Some of what came out of the pipes may have been the oil from the new K&N air filter. I use them on twin 500's with headers and never seen that.
Thank you all again, I am a non wrench turning type of guy, I hope to change that. I did the plugs yesterday, burning just right, not to lean or rich, although a little rich is better in my eyes.
The car has came a long way from over 20 years in a garage in the month I have had it, it had zero maitenance over 42K miles of service is my guess.
We would have taken our weekend ride to hang with the other old cars but it was raining.
I have the Shop Manual and bought CD's from EKLERS but they all combined do not answer all my questions. Thank goodness for the web.

Also I have 2 big books with CORVETTE cloth patches and write up page from each year, make me an offer... Google'd them, patches are hard to come by for the old cars. They will gather dust. I have no interest in keeping them.
Serious offer or more details - email me at btuvell@gmail.com
Just FYI

That plastic strip looks like a 3M product used for any areas that are subjected to stone blasting. Ie: front end of car, leading edge of hood, or in your case, I would suspect that it's a quick stop-gap measure for panels that are slightly mis-aligned. The rear edge of the door should extend out slightly past the next panel so debris doesn't contact the leading edge of the panel while driving.

I don't know if it is for this purpose or not, but I'd be willing to bet it helps keep rock chip damage down on the flared part of the fender at the wheel well. My '79 is beat to death with rock chips in that area.

If memory serves me correctly, those clear plastic pieces were marketed with the name "Nip Chips". You could get them from Terry Michaelis Corvette Parts in Ohio, and they were available for the dogleg where yours is located, and also for behind the front and rear wheelwells. I had them on my '72 for many years but they disappeared somewhere along the way.
