Re: Finally! Fired Up The Big Block! (bence13_33)
Sure is neat to fire up an engine for the first time. I usualy do not like side pipes on C-3's but those black side pipes against that orange body looks very cool, especialy with the sound of that solid cam thumping through them. :chevy
Very nice!!! :) So orange is your favorite color? I guess we can tell!! :) Corvette bigblock valve covers were orange in 72, I think in 74. I guess they were stock in 76 bigblock corvettes also!! MJ
geez!! We knew you were young, but not this young!!
So who are you getting started at an early age?? :) (good work!!)
I can't believe you not only fired it up but went for a test drive (test drive with no hood and open headers !!?!?! ) and you haven't even set the timing yet with a timing light!! What is on top of your distributor BTW? MJ
 Excellent! You need to post your shopping list so we can learn from your experience. Oil leaks are bad news though...nothing gets a car dirtier than an oil leak. Make sure you get all the leaks stopped up...I'm sure it will be an effort to avoid driving it, but if you do drive it make sure you let it cool down for about 30 min then spray some water (prefereably with an attachment that allows detergent to be added to it) underneath the car to blast away the oil, or it will get matted with dust and such.
Wow!!!
You can be really proud of yourself, it´s looking fantastic!
I´m really impressed that you did all the work yourself and that everything turned out well for you.
Now a few questions:
Did you feel any difference in cornering ability because of the increased weight in the front?
Did you change sway bars or any other chassis parts?
I guess your car is sitting now lower than before with the SB, right?
Way to go, Shane, enjoy your Bigblock
Markus
Congratulations Shane. The first thing I did this morning after comming into work is go looking for this post. I thought of you firing it up alot this weekend, wishing I could have been there. It is always exciting the 1st time. Not that it won't be exciting every time after that.
Once again congratulations on a job well done. Now go out and kick some but.
That motor looks beautiful in there! Nice job on everything. I am glad you broke it in and got the chance to drive it. The motor looks so clean with that fresh paint.
I finally got my motor back to the house but because I don't know how to post up the pics to a posting yet, I haven't written anything up. The problem I now have is that my '87 has a ROD KNOCK, so that motor has to be done first before the 454!!
MJ:
Yes, orange has always been my favorite color :). That's the neighbor boy, his dad is wearing the maroon jacket. Denny is wearing the green "starter" jacket, he's the one with the 514ci big block Cobrajet Mustang. Chris is in the far background, he has a 327 in his S10.
Yea, we went out for a nice little short trip. The side pipes are open, the hood was off and so were the t-tops :). I was disappointed to find some small leaks but Chris cheared me up. He said "you should be glad your car even made it out here, let alone running as well as it is."
What do you mean what's on top of my distributor? The cap is tan, it's an Accel distributor cap.
Rockn-Roll:
I will be posting a list of everything with their prices within the next week or two. I'm really liking the 294 solid lifter cam, I actually kind of wish I had stepped up to the 306 solid lifter cam. Oh well, I can always change it out later.
Markus:
I really wasn't going fast enough to be able to tell much of anything . I was only cruising around at about 50mph. The car sits slightly lower in the front but nothing to be worried about. I haven't changed any suspension parts. I'm going to see how it handles and if it's not up to par I'll be getting Gymkhana front springs and a 7 leaf rear spring for it.
Norval:
I really wish you could have been here. It would have made me feel a little better about the break-in. I was so worried that I think I developed an ulcer. One things for sure, I'll never forget that first ride :).
Bob:
If you e-mailed me the pictures of your engine I'd be more than happy to post them for you. So how close is the 454 to being finished?
Once again thanks for all of the incouraging words along the way, it really would have been tough to complete this engine without you guys.
MJ:
What do you mean what's on top of my distributor? The cap is tan, it's an Accel distributor cap.
Mark, that's an HEI "coil in cap" distributor. The big black thing on top is the coil. All the HEI distributors from the mid 70s to the early 90s were built that way. It doesn't use a separate coil and coil wire like an older ignition.
Shane, what's up with the air cleaner. Are you using that flat base?
I'm giving serious thought to painting my brand new blue block orange now ;)
Joe:
It's a really small air cleaner. The filter probably measures 8" in diameter and 2" in height. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that it's going to fit under the hood. My buddy with the 514 Mustang is running a really similar air cleaner....it's all he can fit :).
P.S. If the hood doesn't close, I'm pulling the Torker II intake and replacing it with either a Victor Jr. or a Holley Strip Dominator intake and an L88 hood.
