I need to remove and install a new speedo cable in my '77, I bought the 2 cables from zip (upper and lower) and was wondering what the easiest way to do this was and if you guys have any tricks. Thanks in advance.
The lower is straight forward. Just disconnect at the junction and trans and reconnect. The upper involves lots more. You have to pull the speedo/tach panel loose to get to the back of the speedo to pop the clip that holds the speedo cable to the back of the speedo IT IS TIGHT IN THERE.
I would test both the upper and lower before I did anything. Disconnect at the trans end and put a drill on the cable end to see if the speedo turns. You may have a stripped gear in the trans. If not, open the upper - lower joint and try it. If the upper cable is bad you can pull out the cable from the liner and slide a new one in well greased with white grease. If you end up with a bad speedo you will have to pull the dash panel. Let us know where you are.
I was able to pop my cable off the back of the speedo from behind. Just pop the clipo and pull it out. Not too bad... to put it back on just push it on until you hear the click.
I don't have cruise so only one cable all the way to the trans.
I did this today.....I did the upside down, one hand, in Braile trick, and finally got it to click on to the back of the instrument...started car and found the headlights were stuck in the up position. Had to crawl around under there again to find the two hoses that came off while I was sticking the speedo cable in.... Lots of Blood....Lots of Band-Aids....Back will never be the same...:seeya Cappy

easy way to get to back of speedo...unmount wiper motor,,carefully lift motor with factory sealant intact,,,use 2 inch holesaw to cut hole there,,,,speedo cable and clip are rite there and simple to get at with a pair of pliers,,turns 2 hour job into 15 min job,,a little rtv sealant around hole and remount wiper motor and if you'r carefull nobody will know there is a hole there !!..
save the part you cut out..that is the round " tuit " you have been waiting so long for to get the rest of the projects done.. :)
