i need to know how much air will hit the inside of the back bumper at high speeds (100+) if i remove the spare tire compartment. i dont want to mess up my bumper or paint might more air hit it if i go slower?
thanks,
Mike
FWIW, I've removed my spare tire & tub, but I haven't gone above 70-75MPH. It's been several (maybe 6) months since I removed them and I haven't noticed/felt anything out of the ordinary or seen any damage to the rear end of the car.
I was thinking it'd look a whole lot cleaner under there if I fabricated an aluminum panel to bolt under there and close up the cavity. Nothing extravagant or air-tight or anything. It shouldn't add a lot of weight, but it'd probably help with aerodynamics and also be a pretty good shield between the road and the gas tank. Anyone done something like that?
Jerry, I like that shield idea. I spent enough time involved in road racing to know that underbody airflow is a major source of drag. The shield would help this and look OK as well. If you didn't want to see it, it could be mounted slightly higher. I also have the concern with the rear panel, as mine has no exhaust outlets or mufflers back there to deflect or vent airflow from that area.
mine is gone ,tire and carrier..have had no problems over 100..but the alum. plate idea sounds intresting..especially if it helps my drag strip times :yesnod:
I just took the tire out and left the tub and cover there. Just tighten up the bold all the way. I have had this arrangement up to 125MPH.

:yesnod: :yesnod: Yep... that's what i did. Refinished the tub, painted the strap, and slapped it up there with no spare. I'll take my chances around town. If I decide to take a road trip... I'll put the spare in and ..VARRROMMM.. off I go! :D :D
funny you should talk about "around town" i am taking it on the Hot Rod Power Tour and will be going about 4000 miles with no spare wish me luck i will need it i did just get new BFGs g force tires and they feel good

Better carry 2 cans of fix a flat and a tire repair kit. This will take care of 95 % of flats.
