I have an '82 which had a leaking heater core. Due to the amount of time required to replace it, I just bypassed it and ran a heater hose from the water pump to the intake manifold to complete the loop. Now, the engine is running 60 degrees hotter than it was before. Any ideas or something I am missing? Thanks in advance!
Blocking the heater or by-passing it will not cause overheating.....remember, the first 8 years of Vettes never had a heater unless it was specifically ordered
there were a bunch of other threads on this topic and some members had the same issue you are having and i don't remember hearing that they all were resolved.it doesn't make sense to me either how this could happen.good luck.
If the heater is off, there is no air passing through the heater box taking heat from the heater core coil and in turn the coolant. The coolant temp is unchanged weather it goes through the heater core or not. The only way the heater coil could even effect coolant temp would be to run it with the heater on max fan, wide open all the time. Even then I doubt it would even assist in engine cooling.
To remove the air loosen the clamp on the intake manifold end of the hose you put on and either remove the hose or wiggle it to one side enough to cause it to leak. Once you see antifreeze coming out tighten the hose. Make sure the rad is full when doing this. Top up the rad when done.
