Default Heater Core Bypass and Overheating

I have an '82 which had a leaking heater core. Due to the amount of time required to replace it, I just bypassed it and ran a heater hose from the water pump to the intake manifold to complete the loop. Now, the engine is running 60 degrees hotter than it was before. Any ideas or something I am missing? Thanks in advance!

I'd bet on an air pocket. it shouldn't have caused an issue.

Pardon my ignorance, but if I have an air pocket, how would you eliminate it?

remove the radiator cap and let the engine run till the thermostat opens up and make sure the system is topped off.

Blocking the heater or by-passing it will not cause overheating.....remember, the first 8 years of Vettes never had a heater unless it was specifically ordered

And BTW - you don't need the bypass hose. Get pipe plugs for the intake and water pump heater hose connections. Been running mine like that for years.

I have had mine bypassed for a decade, no change in engine operating temp.

If the heater is off, there is no air passing through the heater box taking heat from the heater core coil and in turn the coolant. The coolant temp is unchanged weather it goes through the heater core or not. The only way the heater coil could even effect coolant temp would be to run it with the heater on max fan, wide open all the time. Even then I doubt it would even assist in engine cooling.

My guess is that you have an air pocket by the temp sender causing it to register 60 degrees hotter than before.

To remove the air loosen the clamp on the intake manifold end of the hose you put on and either remove the hose or wiggle it to one side enough to cause it to leak. Once you see antifreeze coming out tighten the hose. Make sure the rad is full when doing this. Top up the rad when done.

Edit: Engine off.
