Default Interchange Heads and Intake Manifolds

Need advice from the engine builders out there regarding heads and intake manifolds.

1. Are the "large oval port" heads for a 454 from 1971 to 1972 to 1973 interchangable? The casting numbers are:
1971 = 3993820
1972 = 3999241
1973 = 353049
If there are differences do you know what they are?

2. Are the intake manifolds for the same years interchangable? The numbers are:
1971 = 3977608
1972 = 6263763
1973 = 353015

I know the 73 had EGR and 71 and 72 did not. So here is the question - Can you use a 1972 intake on a 1973 head or a 73 intake on a 72 head or use a 71 intake on a 73 head and not run into casting problems with the ports. The ports seem to be the same size, but are there passages in the head or around the exhaust crossover that may affect interchangability? Seems like if it is a large oval port head and open chamber it should work, but are there any real world experiences out there? Many thanks.

;)

Heads and manifolds will interchange. Depending on what year you have, you might have height problems putting the cast iron intakes on a 73. The 73-74 used a very low profile intake.

All the earlier heads will fit. Earlier heads have a smaller combustion chamber that the later 049 heads. 820 and 241 are 113cc while the 049 is 118cc.

Hope this helps.

Terry, are you saying there is just a height difference in the manifold or is there an "angle difference in the intake to the head where you may have problems.

The 73 049's have a larger combustion chamber than the 71/72's right. Is this not better for total compression wiht a piston that yields 9.5:1? Thanks
