Hey everybody,
I am a first time vette owner. Have a lot to learn and have a billion questions. I'll start with maybe an easy one. Had to jump the car when I test drove it. I am taking it in to have a thorough inspection done. I will be installing a new battery with a cutoff switch to ensure it will not drain until I get the electrical system checked. While inspecting the battery area, I noticed a couple of things. 1) there was no hold down. I am installing one. and 2) there were a couple of wires not connected and what appears to be a couple of vacuum hoses. I know I will have to wait and try to find out what the wires are for but can anyone tell me what the hoses are for? Also, what are the best reference/toubleshooting/restoration guides are out there?

Thanks!

Welcome aboard!! Hope you have deep pockets!
What year do you have?
The 'Vacuum' hoses are most likely the old battery vent hoses that were installed originally. Back in the day, the gasses from the battery needs to be vented outside the car, these hose were attached to the filler caps on the battery to vent these gasses.
IMO I would not put a lead/acid battery back in your Vette.
Spend the extra money and get a gel battery (Optima, Deka etc) and never worry about venting or acid leaking into the compartment again.

As far as reference material, it's hard to beat the factory GM shop manuals (not the Haynes aftermarket stuff) and the factory Assembly (AIM) manuals- You can find them both fairly cheaply on-line.
There are other books as well but no Vette owner should be without at least those two.

Welcome and congratulation on your new Vette.
Here's how the original battery vent hoses were installed.

Here's how the battery is held in place.

Regards Pete.
