Can anyone tell me what the numbers on a small plate next to the oil filter is. Im tring to figure what the engine is, it looks like block has been cut so i didn't find inscribed codes also found a small plate on passenger side head with mexico stamped in it. The car is a 75 coupe. Thanks for any help.
I have one of the Mexico blocks in the shop right now. I'm not going to use it I don't believe. The guy who owns it had it sieze up shortly after start up with just fresh bearings. It had the Mexican heads and a 2442 cast crank.
I found the thrust bearing front side thrust surface gone and number 1 main half gone completely to the metal.
I borgauged (not sure that's a word) the mains and found the front half of number 1 was proper size but the back half of the same main 0.004 under minimum size.
I don't know how that can happen from a machining standpoint, never the less, it is that way.
Looking at the cost of an align hone and not knowing it there are other issues, I decided with the owner to scrap his block and replace it.
I've read that the Mexican blocks were very good and I've read they are not. Having seen this one, I tend to want to shy away from them. Not that they all are that way, Just what I have in here now.
I under stand that, The engine in my car runs great but i think that since the engine is not original. I might look into a 383 or a lt1 and build it for some mussle and looks.
