My 1973 M20 1st/2nd gear slider is just touching the reverse gear idler when in 1st gear. The transmission was sold to me a year ago as rebuilt. I have no idea who did the rebuild, but I think it was rebuilt because I could see new brass and assembly lube when I inspected it. I have it on the bench and can see a little wear on the slider and idler gear where they have been touching. Where do you think the problem is? Is it a problem with the assembly of the main shaft?
just rebuilt my muncie, but im no expert. i do have a book that tells u to grid a bit off the rev idler teeth to prevent this. another possibility... ill need to check my muncie build video again, but apparently older 3/4 sliders werent tapered, and the vid warned of installing the 3/4 slider in the 1/2 position for this reason. the missing thrust washer could do it as well.
I had the same problem with my m22 . I called 5speed.com and he was very helpful . He told me to grind about .010 " off the gear teeth so it doesn't rub in first gear .
He explained it as just overall wear increasing the clearance enough to let this happen .
Mine made a noise in first gear that sounded like a tooth was missing. I just finished putting it back together yesterday and hope to have it back in the car by the end of the month .

Yup, thats exactly what mine is doing. If I pull back on the shifter a small amount, it's quiet. I took the transmission apart last night. The thrust washer is in place and ok. The sliders are in the right places and everything is nice and tight. I can see where the 1/2 slider has been touching the idler gear just a small amount. My first thought was just grind a little off the idler but was concerned that I had a more serious issue on the main shaft. Based on what you guys are saying I am going to grind the idler down a little to provide more clearance.
