I had it out and put new side yokes in it and filled it up with Lucas synthetic gear oil and two bottles of gm posi additive. After I drive a few miles I can here a clicking sound when turning.Sometimes it will continue when after the turn for 30 feet or so.Once it did it turning into the driveway.I jacked the rear up on stands.I could hear it while turning the rear wheels by hand.Sounded like a roulette wheel.I let the car down and put it away.I got back in it today no clicking.Drove for about 6 miles and left a red light and it clicked for about 50 feet and quit. When I drained the rear oil was clean with no sign of any clutch material or bits of metal.Gears looked good no strange wear pattern. No excessive play in it.Any thoughts on this one?
Try putting in non-synthetic fluid and the GM additive. When you had it apart did you check all the bolts on the ring gear to make sure they were tight?
Everything was tight and there was nothing obvious.I d on't know how long the fluid had been in it.The po changed it out because it wasn't very dark and looked good when I drained it out.Maybe the synthetic fluid is just a little to slippery for the clutches.I ran it before in a posi with out any problems. It looks like the rear had never been opened up or rebuilt.Seems tight just the clicking. When I get on it it dosent have any problems leaving two black marks on the road so I don't think its slipping.
Could be.I haven't driven it that much since I changed out the side yokes and the fluid. The diff sat for several weeks out of the car so the clutches did have plenty of time for the additive to drain off of them.
If it has done it at least once going straight ahead, it's not likely the clutches. They aren't moving. Also to hear it when the wheels were jacked up makes it seem quite unlikely that it's clutches. Usually pretty hard to turn just one wheel only by hand, which is what you would have to do to make the clutches turn. I'd make sure all the half shaft u-joint bolts are tight and nothing amiss in a u-joint.
I'll double check the bolts. All new u joints at the same time I had the rear end out.Strange it dosent do it all the time.I may check the parking brake hardware.I replaced it all with SS hardware when I completely replaced everything in the entire brake system.I don't see anything rubbing or scratches where it has.I'll get to the bottom of it sooner or later.
