My dad always used Amsoil in the 'Vette. He runs it in his truck every now and again. From what he told me they were one of the original synthetic oil companies back in the day. He also said that it is great stuff. Personally, once I get the big block broken in I'll probably just run Mobil 1 synthetic. Amsoil is pretty pricey.
I just had a long talk with the Amsoil guy at the world of wheels show, ok it was about 3-4 weeks ago now :bb I've also read everything I can find on oil and have come to the decision that Amsoil is the best stuff out there, better than Mobil 1 by far, Red line, Royal purple everything.
The best thing to do is to use Amsoil and then TEST the oil at regular intervals. That way you KNOW how good the oil is and how your engine is wearing. If you just dump the oil you are throwing out the only wear indicator you have for the inside of the engine...
And BTW, Amsoil is supposed to be cheaper if you do it this way. But when you have an $6000 to $8000 engine to protect your going to skimp on oil???
According to what I have read, you can go approximately 15,000 - 25,000 between changes if you check (test) the oil regularly and use Amsoil. That REALLY brings the price back down to "reasonable." But really, is anything too good for our gals?
At the increasing risk of getting banned from this list, since everytime I use a car as an example it hapens to be a ricemobile, here's my experience:
I put Amsoil in both my Mazda Miata's and 323 GTX's trannies (the latter being a 4WD rally car) when I first got them. Both had faulty 2nd gear synchros and shifting from 1st to 2nd was almost impossible sometimes. Amsoil cured BOTH cars. The difference in the GTX was night and day; it went from almost undriveable (I got to the point where I would shift from 1st to 3rd constantly) to being one of the smoothest GTX trannies alive.
Another thing, we did one of those tests like in the infommercials where you put different oils on a spinning wheel attached to an engine and see how much pressure it takes to stop the wheel with each oil. All mineral oils tied at around 4 lbs. Mobil 1 made it to 5 lbs and Amsoil made it to 6 lbs. We also tested some additives loke Slick 50 Prolong and X1-R but that's another long story.
