Default Oil on Floorboard

Hi All,

New to the forum and also to Corvette's. I just acquired a 1975 a few weeks back and have started working on the interior. I removed the carpet and noticed that there is something that looks like oil under the padding. Any idea on how it may have gotten there and how to stop it from coming back?

Thanks!

Check the capillary tube that goes to the oil pressure gauge, sometimes it leaks oil, mine did.

Changed mine to an electric gauge to prevent that ever happening!

The aftermarket tubes and compression fittings dont work well with the oil pressure gauge.

I bought new parts and they seem to work fine. But you have to tighten them pretty good. Electric conversion probably makes more sense.

Oil pressure gauges were electric starting in 1974.

Could it be some sort of sound deadening material / substance

What type gauge does the car have?

Is there oil coating the outside panels of the foot well? If the engine has been leaking oil onto the under carriage and the seam in the floor panel is loose then it's possible for the oil to seep in through the seam and begin soaking into the padding and carpet.

I have confirmed that the gauge is not mechanical but electrical. I am going to start the cleanup tonight and hopefully get a better view of what exactly I have going on. The engine does not seem to have a leak now but might have at some point.

Thanks for all the responses, much appreciated.

Could it be a bad heater core that drips antifreeze in on the carpet?

Probably anti-freeze leaking from the heater core. It's still possible that it could habe been fixed in the past. Usually when the heater core leaks you will get condensation on the windshield if you turn on the defrosters.

It's dark and ugly. I have started to clean up a bit and it looks like it is coming from near the center column on the passenger side. I think the heater core is the culprit. Once I get the mess cleaned up all the way I will know for sure.

It does sound like the heater core. But it may have been repaired (optimist speaking). If not you should see anti-freeze under the car as well.

Check to see if the heater hoses are still going to the core. Many people will deny the inevitable and just do a bypass.

Just replaced the heater core on my '69, non-AC, BB car and don't want to do it anytime soon again. Not really much fun.

Best of luck. Ralph
