i have a 1979 L-48 auto and want to redo the exhaust on it. it already has some old true duals on it with mufflers in the middle. they are really rusty and the system just isnt loud enough for me. i want to run new true duals without the mufflers. hopefully that will give me the sound im looking for. i am thinking about ordering the stainless steel 2 1/2" dual exhaust out of the mid america corvette catalog. it says it is a custom fit system. has anyone tried this exhaust system? does it actually fit like they say it will? any advice or input anyone can give me would be much appreciated. thanks
well im not sure if Lincoln really wants me to run without mufflers, but i dont think it will be a problem. i had a muffler shop tell me that i could run straight pipes on my firebird when i had that. so to me that sounds like running straight pipes shouldnt be too big of a problem, atleast i hope it isnt. this vette is my new toy and i want to have fun with it, but i dont want to make anything illegal on it. but for now, i just plan on running the straight pipes at first with some free flow targa mufflers out the back that are in the ecklers catalog which are basically like straight pipes. i figure if i dont like the sound or i get in trouble i can just replace the back pipes with some mufflers. does it sound like this setup will work...im obviously no expert, thats why im turning to the vast knowledge of all of you on the forum, it is impressive how much some of you know. but before i try any of this exhaust stuff i want to make sure it will fit, does anybody here know if the pipes from mid america will fit right, or should i just spend more money and go to a local shop and have them take care of it all. by the way, what are some of the exhaust set ups that some of you run.
I didn't like mine I got from Mid-America. They were supposed to be bolt up, and IMHO, they were not.
After I put in my ZZ4 and tied the headers together, the exhaust guy redid the exhaust anyways. He also installed my Flowmaster 40's. So the only original part of my exhaust is about 3 feet.
It does work, but I also had to bend the pipe in a couple of places. I won't go with pre-built again.
ive still got the original engine in it, and everything else is stock as far as i know. do you think i would still have problems with the fit, or should i just go to the professionals....
It all bolted up fine, but the joints are not welded. I had to do alot of pre-installation fits. Then I clamped it all down with the clamps provided and welded it.
Honestly, I had more time in it than desired. If I would have to do it again, I will take it to a professional and have them put it in. I would have an "H" pipe installed as well. True duals, H-pipe, and Flowmasters sound totally awesome.
I had a exhaust shop custom bend my 2.5", H, true dual system for about the same price as the MA system. After reading the many CorvetteForum posts about exhaust and asking similar questions, the majority of people will tell you to have a shop bend it because the MA systems don't bolt up without modification.
Don't bother with DynoMax Turbo mufflers. At the advice of several forum members, I installed these mufflers on my '81. I was hoping to increase exhaust flow and improve the sound. What I got, however, was a pair of mufflers that are about as quiet as stock! Imagine my disappointment when I started my engine. I've heard several Vettes with Flowmaster mufflers. Compared to DynoMax, Flowmasters offer better sound. :)
