Default Transmission may be going out!

Just as I order a new 383 I feel like the tranny is giving out. Maybe someone can help me out. When I put it in park and let off the brake, a lot of times it kind of pops and jerks forward, or backwards, whichever way I'm facing, like it wants to keep going but something is stopping it. usually I put it back in gear and then Back to park a couple of times and it will eventually catch. Also when I take it from park to reverse or drive it sometimes makes such a hard shift that it sends out a loud popping noise just to shift to one of those two. Any advice will be helpful. Will be putting a new motor in next weekend and would like to address this also

I take it this is a Auto 3speed trans?

First Check fluid and also look for leaks
2nd Check linkage to make sure its good and set correct.
3rd Check Trans mount and U-joints
4th Change fluid and filter

Yes it is. Alright I'll check everything out. Although it would be nice to have a new one I hope I won't have to.

The 3speeds are pretty easy to rebuild and there are plenty of kits out there to beef it up a little.

Might be a good time to overhaul if its not a simple linkage/mount/etc... issue if you plan on making any decent power with your new motor.

Sounds good and all but what would you recommend for someone who doesn't really have the time or resources to be without the car too long. It's my daily driver so I would need it done quick

If you are parking on a hill it might just be the car moving until it catches on the parking pawl. Otherwise, I would look at things like U-joints, mounts and even the rear end snubber bushing. Usually when the transmission is going bad you get slow shifts, slippage which results in higher RPM's than usual for the driving conditions or maybe even loss of a specific gear. It doesn't sound like the tranny to me.

I'm hoping it isn't the trans.
Another question, considering I'm putting in a 383, any recommendations on whether or not I will need a new trans or differential to run that. Understand this is my daily vehicle and I will NOT be racing it. I would like to show the power of that motor from time to time though.

If you are careful and assuming their current state of health yes they can survive behind the new 383.

Get a core from a yard/eBay/etc... and rebuild while using yours. Demand for TH350/400's has dropped in place of 4speeds now. So you could get a 3speed pretty cheap to build up.

But check everything else out first before doing that.

Sounds like lash in the driveline, not the trans.
As mentioned above, check the drive shaft and half shaft u-joints and also check for slop in the rear axle itself.

If you need a trans I might be willing to sell the one out of my 78. There were no issues when I pulled it out. PM me if you need it, I'm in NC.
