Are you talking about the "R" connection wire on a starter?
If you have HEI or a MSD type ignition box, you do not need that wire. If it is another solenoid, please let us know.

Without having to go thru your life history, That is the wire that goes to the neutral safety switch under the dash.
I would say someone has "jumped it" and the car will start in gear so be careful with that.

it's a 76 vette,I have a wiring diagram, purple is the color, however its a #10 wire, PO has cut the fuseable link off. I'm thinking it should go down in size of wire to a #12 or #14 that goese to the solenoid, cause the stud on the solenoid is small.

The wire that energizes the solenoid to engage the starter is generally a purple wire (on most gm's of that era, but I can't say specifically on your car) and goes to the small inside (nearest the block) terminal, however there will not be a fusible link on it. Fusible links are used on power source wires and are located at the beginning of the circuit. Any fusible links would have been connected to large battery stud.

My now sold 77 Indy pace car had a fused purple wire to the starter and it blew on the side of the road and then the car wouldn't start.
