Strange Noise

It doesn't do it in reverse or when driving.
When I apply the brakes it sounds like I have a ball card in my spokes?
I sounds like an old school roller coaster when it goes up the 1st big hill.
Anybody been through this type of problem before?
Newer pads,calipers,rotors.
Any help appreciated

Hi Marshal these kinds of exploratory questions are great but in the end you are getting nothing but guesses. It has been my experience that even if one of gets it right like say a suggestion it's a broken parking brake spring, you'll still have to pull the wheel and inspect everything. This will mean the caliper might have to be removed which means bleeding and this will mean a battle to remove the rotor to get to the parking brake hardware which may also mean the parking brake hardware is shot and needs to be overhauled.

U17,
It is only making the noise when the brakes are applied & moving in the forward direction. I have tried it in reverse and it is quiet & while driving @ normal road speeds I do not hear it until I apply the brakes.
It does have a spring type sound so Mark you maybe right its in the
e- brake & the hardware is getting hung up in there. Yes, I need to remove the drivers side rear wheel and inspect. I was hoping that if nothing is visually obvious through this posting someone familar with brakes could point me in the right direction.
Ouch...1/2 shaft through the floor boards must sound like an IED going off
U17 Did you ever determine what caused the 1/2 shaft to fly off? That had to be scarey

As such... I'm askin questions now so I can avoid such a disaster

if you are getting noise when turning a replenish of rear fluid with the GM additive might clear it up. They say when the fluid is shot the clutches in the rear chatter.
I used a 85/90 weight gear lube from Napa but used the Delco brand
limited slip additive as I was told on this forum not to skimp on the additive. No noise from the rear.
I'm getting a clicking noise like something is rubbing somewhere
when I apply the brakes. Gotto get it apart and update thread.

That had to be scarey
With the ZZ383 and 700R4 and shortened drive shaft... Something was not secured / fastened correctly.... Same card in spokes clicking noise before the IED .. !!!

I work cheap than go expensive.
If you change the rear fluid and the noise clears up you got off cheap.
Rear gear oil changes are often ignored till a noise or problem arises.
For the average guy its a PIA to change on jack stands.
May pay to take it to a trusted shop and bring such fluids and
SUPERVISE the change. If it still makes a noise than like my problem you will have to investigate further. Good thing is theres plenty of help here.
U17 no hijack issues with me post em. I'd be interested how you fixed up a big ole hole. That sounds like allot of duck tape.
Hey where's U17 from? Sounds like a Uboat#

I still have the orig drive train and have not swapped anything out.
Mines a 427/390hp, M-20, 3:08 gears with 79,000 orig miles.
I guess I got it at the time when some stuff is just wearing as I go.

Start a thread about the issue and you'll get some good advice. The fluid can be changed with the differential in the car but you'd be required to drill a drain plug hole from under the car. The draining fluid would draw out any metal from the drill. Tap for a plug and use a fluid flush to wash out the filings. If you find a lot of clutch material in your fluid then the clutch discs are likely toast and the rear end needs to be rebuilt. If the fluid looks okay simply plug the hole and fill till it pukes with new fluid and additive for posi rear ends.

your posting is spot on for someone with the means to drill and tap rear housing. It sounds like in Phanns' case he doesn't have the means to do such much like me when I changed mine last month.
I would suggest he does as I did. I put the car up on jack stands at a friends huge 2 bay garage(lift not in yet)

I removed the P/S rear tire than the fill plug. I held a drain hose in the opening and had the young guy suck out the fluid with the syphon pump. We got it all out as best as we could as we heard air being sucked up and a good amount of fluid was removed.
It looked dirty but no metal particles.
I refilled with almost 3 qts of 85/90 gear lube from Napa and mixed the GM additive into one of the quarts and we pumped it into the rear till full.
We used a different pump(clean) so no to contaminate the new fluid.
It would have been ideal to tap a drain plug but for as infrequently as it requires changing we just did it the best way we knew with what we had to work with. After the change, I drove it several miles than pulled into a parking lot and did a series of circles in both directions and no chattering heard. I did that at the rec of a posting I read here.
I hope this helps Phann, indirectly of my situation
When I get my D/S wheel off I'll let everyone know what I find.
This way we can all make a note to self said noise could be the following......

Marshal look like you going to need alot of duck tape or you can just fiber glass it back
