I recently purchased a '71 LT-1. When I had a local NCRS judge inspect the car for me it was documented that the then owner had the automatic choke cable disconnected. Reason being was that the choke flap stuck closed. I have been in contact with a previous owner who tells me he had the carb professionally rebuilt a few years back and it operated just fine for him.
Now, when I compare my carb to other LT-1 carb pics online, there are some obvious differences. It appears the flap linkage arm that the auto choke arm attaches to is not in the right position. I fully realize I am not using the proper terminology but was hoping you could take a look at the following pics and let me know what is wrong. Like I said, I see obvious differences in how my flap and arm is positioned compared to other pics on the web. I am hopeful the experts here can look at the pics and know exactly what I need to do to get the choke operating properly again. The choke arm appears to lower as the engine warms and if I connect the linkage with the arm as it is positioned now the flap would open maybe 1/4" only...not correct.
Yes the flapper is on the wrong way for sure. The blades should open the opposite way. Front side goes up and back side goes down. Someone installed the plate the wrong way.
Take out the 2 screws "carefully " do not drop them into the motor. Slide the flapper out and rotate the arm down and slide the flapper back in and put screws back in.
Thank you Gordonm...we knew it could not be on right. Quite an easy fix....can't believe that through the last 4 years and two different owners and after a professionally rebuilt carb, the flap backwards was never discovered!
Auto choke works perfect now. Nice little project with my dad to boot!
