Just took my 81 out for it's first real shake down drive since I bought her. The steering is doesn't have a lot of play in it, but it is over boosted and very numb.
I realize that this is the way they came from the factory, so there's really nothing wrong here, but is there any way to improve the road feel of the steering short of going with a manual steering set up?
the manual system uses the same box. what tire pressure are you running? are you sure you dont have play in the box or any of the steering linkage, tire rods, idler arm, etc.?
Just set the tires at 32 psi all around.
There may be a little play in the steering linkage, it's 30+ years old after all, but there isn't much of a dead spot on center, so I don't think that's the source of the problem.
I wouldn't say the car is unresponsive when you turn the wheel, it's more like the steering is so smooth and easy to turn that it feels disconnected to the car. Almost like a video game. The car turns when you tell it to turn, but there's no feedback from the tires.
Maybe I'm asking too much from 30 year old GM technology.
Na, It shouldn't be that way. Make sure it has the correct valve with the correct spring, that the valve is centered, that the pressures are correct and maybe you should look at the caster too. Set it as high as possible.
