I noticed you had the Comp Cam 292H cam and switched it for the 272. How do they compare and how streetable was the 292H cam? If I would run it I would run a vaccum canister to be safe. How hard do they pull in the mid-range?
Thanks

Ok here is the deal I bought the Vette with the 292H the previous owners uncle was a mechanic by trade and they installed the Comp Cam 292H, Lifters, Springs and Rocker tip Rollers 6 months before I bought the vette. The vette idle real bad Could not get it to idle below 800rpm in D and 1200 in N, Brakes were real bad, best vacuum reading I had was 11 at idle. I was so discussed at the drivability of the vette I called Com Cams to give them poopie on how they could be so irresponsible as to recommend such a cam for the Street. Well the Rep said that they would never recommend the 292H for the street especially on an auto Vette, the Rep added that the 292H has a very poor idle and also needed at least 10.5 compression and a 3000 stall converter. Bottom line I made up my mine either sell the vette or replace the Cam. I decided to replace the Cam. I went to a trusted local speed shop told the guy that I wanted just enough of a Cam to wake up the Monster but also wanted good brakes, good idle, Stock stall converter, and good street manners He suggested the Crane 272 H. I will say the crane is a great cam for a street Nice bottom end good mid range. The biggest surprise was when I pulled The Comp 292H I discovered that 3 of the lobes were worn down to almost nothing I was basically running on 5 good cylinders Bottom line I did not have a good Comp Cam in the Monster to draw a good comparison. I would say that most of my problems was due to the 3 bad lobes and not the huge duration of the Comp Cam. If you have an Auto I would not recommend the 292H if you have a stick I think you can live with it if you don’t mine the bad brakes. I will also say that the biggest cam for the street for and auto vette 262-268 duration for a SMB and a 272-284 duration for a BB

Corey:
What size engine are you building, and what tranny? The more cubic inches you have the tamer a cam becomes. I'm running the Comp Cams Magnum 294 solid lifter cam. It's a really nice cam, but if I had R-Port heads I'd be ditching it and going with the 306 duration solid lifter cam. I'm running a Super T10 wide ratio 4 speed with a 3.36 rear end and it has tons of bottom end (way more than I had anticipated). You can't really compare 73-454's 292 hydraulic cam to my 294 solid cam because they are two totally different animals.

Have you considered going with a solid lifter cam? Personally if I were going to go with a cam that had a duration in the 290's I wouldn't even consider a hydraulic cam. That's just my opinion though, some will probably disagree with me.

*Edit* P.S. the topic was intended for 73-454, I'm sorry if I messed up your thread at all I just thought I would toss my $.02 in :)

Bence, by all means I wanted you input because you are running the cam I have in mind. :yesnod: I thought about the 306, but afraid it will be too radical for the street. I want the power but want something that will not shake my fillings loose in the process. I'm building a 468ci like you and plan to run a t-56 6 speed and 4.11's in the rear.

P.S. What is the intake ceterline for the 294s? I know the LSA is 110.
Thanks

I guess we all want more power, But having an enjoable street vette is more important to a lot vette owners then just raw power. On what I have learned about cams ( the hard way) is if it states that it needs a 3000 or higher stall converter forget-it its not a good street Cam. Like I said on my other post guys with stick vettes can get away with larger cams then the guys with auto's Its such a pain in the butt to swap cams I would not want to do it again It was my 1st time and I hope it is my last time ( took me 20 hours to complete the swap)
