What does it mean if my battery reads somewhere between 13.8 and 14.2V with the engine not running. I know it should just be right around 12.5V.
Where are you getting your reading? The dash gauge or a hand held digital multi meter? I had a battery that held a standalone charge of 13+V even if it were sitting on my workbench. Higher voltages aren't common but not unusual.
use another meter to check the battery in your multimeter or just switch it out with a new battery. over 12.7 Volts is a 'surface-charge' and should bleed down to 12.7 after a day.
A single brand new wet cell puts out 2.2 volts, so six of them, as found in most all of our batteries, will put out 13.2 volts. Never more, often less. I'd be checking the same battery with another multimeter or two.
Since you brought it up, you're onto a good way of keeping an eye on your battery condition. When checking battery terminal voltage, immeadiately after charging, will be holding a surface charge, that will show higher than normal voltage. Let things sit for a day, then check terminal voltage. A new battery will show 12.8 volts, then go down from there, as the battery ages/deteriorates. If a battery charged the day before, shows an open terminal voltage near 12 volts or below, past the time for needing a new one.
