having some issues with setting timing on my 69.the dist is stock but i'm running a crane module in place of points.intial timing seems to retard after it is set and rechecked.also total timing seems to be coming in way late.checked the wieghts and they are free.total timing with vac advance is about 33,and that seems way late too.
do you have a dial back timing light? If so remove the springs, disconnect the vacuum advance, set the dial to 36 and set the timing to zero degrees. Slowly tighten the bolt and watch the timing to make sure the distributor doesnt move as you tighten the bolt. Reinstall the springs and vacuum line. The vacuum should add no more than 16 degrees of advance.
yes,i do have a dial light.through some reasearch i read the stock advance is set to come in at high rpm.if this is the case then it could be why i cant get total timing.don't realy want to rev it that high.
thats why I told you to remove the springs, you dont have to rev it, you will get total advance at idle.
On the other hand if you are just trying to time it stock make sure the distributor doesnt move after setting the initial timing. Do you know if you have stock advance weights and springs?
do not know for sure if they are stock or not.everything looks original and i did have to clean them up some.if the stock spring is a high rpm spring i may want a lighter spring to bring the advance in sooner.
