I called a engine builder today that was recomended by a forum member about rebuilding my engine to a 383. He told me that there were various options we could go with depending on what I wanted to do. The price range was $4500 to $6500 depending on how high of quality parts I wanted to use. This price includes removing and re-install, the whole ball of wax. Since I am not going to race the engine and just want a really good 0-60ish car, I think that the low end would be more than sufficient. Two questions 1) What do you guys think of the price? 2)What items specifically do I need be particuliar about as far as parts selection goes? Keep in mind that this is really a cruiser that I would like to be able to occasionally smoke some people off the line with, but I dont race or drive like a nut. I am going down there to talk specifics and want to be educated as to what I need or want. The reason I am thinking stroker is because I would like to achieve 400 hp and similar tq and from what I have read/hear achieving that with a natural 350 will cost about as much as a stroker but with the stroker you get the benefit of the better tq curve. Fire away!
The shop comes highly recomended...the lowest price is not junky components, but not the top of the line. The one of the questions asked by the shop was how am I going to drive it. When I told him, he steered me towards the lower side since I probably wont wind it over 6k.
By comparison you are at 3k for your setup. What would a shop cost to install it to compare apples to apples?
Do the prices you have been quoted include new carb, better ignition and headers and mufflers.....if it does it seems a fair price range....if you are getting headers and want good low down torque, make sure you get long tube ones, not the shorty ones...i spent far more than that on premium components but my engine is well over the top for a street driven car....sounds like a reasonable deal so long as everything is included....john :chevy

After having bought some of my parts for my 383 and having the rest bought by the shop that built it (Fast Times Motorworks), I am between 4500-5500. It's not that high, especially if the shop is reputable. What is the name of the shop in Wis.?
It's tough to beat the deal that GrandSportC3 is getting. :yesnod:
I have ~$2500 in my engine>
Trick Flow heads
SCAT crank
Edelbrock Performer intake
Comp Cams 280H
1.6 ratio roller tipped (stamped steel) rockers
Re-used old Q-Jet and HEI distributor
Headman headers w/Jet Hot coating inside and out (used $200)
Jazn, There are several shops I have checked out...the one I actually got a price from is Automotive Engine Rebuilders in Waukesha my hometown. The other two that were recomended by forum members are Motor Master Racing in Hartford and NVR Racing in Butler. I got a quote on a stock rebuild from NVR. It was quoted at 2500 plus the removal and install. So guessing $500 to $700 for the removal and install that would put me at maybe 3200 so the roughly 1500 didnt seem too bad to go stroker? What do you guys think?

I will see how good the deal is when I'll have the engine installed. I will keep you guys updated.
BTW: I don't think that the price of the engine I purchased is low because of lower quality. This company produces a large amount of High Performance and Racing Engines. They get parts a lot cheaper than smaller shops that produce a small amount of engines. Lager shops usually have better equipment than smaller shops. CNC machines are awsome. They are competely computer controlled (CNC = COMPUTER NUMERIC CONTROL) and more accurate than regular machines) However - they are pretty expensive - too expensive for a smaller shop.
The cost seems high, until you factor in that the shop is doing it all, including installation and removal. This is worth at least $1500. And this would bring your cost down to roughly $3000, where Olivier is at. So I don't think that's a bad deal. I'm in the middle of doing mine right now, and with tools and all, will be lucky to get out of it for less than $3000, more if I go with the 383.
Plus, with them doing it all, they'll probably warranty the work for you. At least they should.

Well - $1500 to remove and install a engine would be quite expensive...
I paid close to $1000 when I had my engine replaced on my 69 Vert (sold)
However - I had some bolt ons transferred from the old engine to the new engine (including intake, ignition, water pump etc.) which raised the price. A engine swap with a complete engine shouldn't cost more than $600 - $700
Although I'm quite happy with my new 383 I sure wish I would have known about the place where you bought yours from, you could have had 2 delivered to my house and I would have save you the install cost :D Please bring it by on your way home so I can get some pics and hopefully some video, I'm dying to see and hear it!

I will probably stop on the way to Clearwater and on the way back so that you can see (and hear) the before and after!!!

I think that if you contact them they'll probably sell you one just like it for the same price. They will save the Ebay fee and therefore it's a good deal for them. I didn't buy through Ebay too. They have plenty of those engines already built and ready to ship...
Dolla, the reason for asking about whether the headers and carb were included is that there is not much point doing headwork on a 383 to get it to breathe well then restricting the inlet flow through your old carbie and restricting it on the outlet side with cast iron manifolds.......good luck with it....john :chevy
