Default Recommendations on Octane Boost

What do you guys recommend for the best octane boost and where can I get some?

I just bought a BB vert from a guy that is running the timing advanced slightly and mixing a few gallons of 110 with his premium. I do not want to have to do this, and I would prefer not to have to turn back the timing. He says it runs awesome with this set up.

What do you think?

You are going to pay $5 for a pint of octane booster vs. $4 for a gallon of 110 octane race fuel. I would stick with the fuel, besides it smells really good coming out of the pipes :)

Look here: http://www.kemcooil.com/fueladditives.html This is genuine Tetraethel lead. Why not try unleaded premium and nothing else and see if it pings before you spend $$$. Then if you need this stuff, add just enough to stop pinging. Don`t bother with the stuff at parts stores. OR, go to paint store and get some toluene. You can add up to 30% mixed with premium unleaded for an octane of about 99. I`ll see if I can find some reading material.

Last year someone posted the formula to mix up your own octane boost using tulane...

I wish they would do it again so I can mix up my own for my truck...
Damn MTBE is killing my performance... :cry

I use NOS octane boost and it worked for me on the dyno it stopped the knock under boost and it was 94+degrees with a 47% humidity in the shop so Im sticking with it for now. :yesnod:

Off the shelf boosters will raise octane a point, but that point is only one tenth-92 to 92.1. If that works for you, that`s great! and it can be found even in food stores, so availability is not an issue. But if you need a real boost, well...Timing can always be retarded somewhat, but this will raise the engine temperture, and performance will suffer along with fuel consumption. Check this out:
http://home.kscable.com/ssutton/miat...e/toluene.html

I run the cheapest premium I can find for my LS4 and with 36* total advance and I can stand on it in 4th gear at 25mph with no ping. Some say using a better grade of premium(?) will keep the engine out of ping. This may have limitations on longer trips. Let me know if the above link does not work for you. :)

Well there are some varied opinions! I guess if you would feel uneasy using boosters, then by all means, do not use them. I have heard that some of these boosters have some harsh cleaners in them and maybe that is what Clem sees in his carb rebuilding. There are also those that have not had any adverse effects using rocket fuel. Unless there is a bias against lead or catalytic converters are in use, I feel Tetraethel lead is the best choice. But I am also going to experiment when the time comes. It`s all part of Hotrodding!

So you are planning to use the Lead 130 product from Kemco?

Where do you buy that stuff?

Yes I plan on buying the lead 130. They will sell you a case of 12qts. for $120 plus shipping. If you want some right now, let me know and maybe you can get it cheaper. I`m going to buy from a friend who is ordering a bunch, but I think he is ordering early Monday Morning-may already be too late. Sorry if it is too late. But there will be a next time.

I would have to say that all that junk they sell in gas stations and supermarkets are not worth the time that you spend looking at them.....The best thing to do if you have a high CR engine is mixing race gas with normal gas.
