Default 1968 Wiper Confusion

First time poster. Working on PO wiring issues. #1 Wipers do not work. Read the Shmokey and DZRIck posts. I have 12 volts on yellow wire on 123 connector with the key on and wiper switch off. Also have 12 volts on all three wires:red-red,white-2blacks, black to brown. Have installed new relay, switch, limit switch, and motor. With key on and switch to low speed, I hear a click from both the relay and the motor, then another click from the motor when I switch to high speed. I found PO wired the switch backwards, and did not tighten the limit switch arm. I am guessing I have a grounding issue but do not know what to look for. Trying to read the AIM and service manual, but did not find anything to address this issue. I did run a separate ground wire from the switch to the back of the guage pod. I am also puzzled by the guage fuse blowing each time I turn onthe ignition- but that is another problem. Also, noticed this brown wire ( pic below) which I believe connects to the radio capacitor. Radio works. could this mean I have ground problems?

Pic won't open for me, but all the RFI capacitors are shown in the U69 options section of the AIM. Blower motor gets one and that might be the brown you've found.

Thanks. Blower is not working. You may have hit on somehting there. Still learning how to uplooad pics. Asked for help.

The wire and plug are standing up behind the ignition switch. Seems the ground for the wipers also ground the blower through the capacitor on the motor?

If you will right click in IMG Code in PhotoBucket below each pic, it will copy the link. You can then paste your link in the body of your post.

I would bench test the wiper motor first. Sometimes just freeing the thing up from the arms and running it solves the problem.

Wilcox has great instructions for this. The thread below takes you to Wilcox and the video. Pretty easy to do.

Thanks. Will get back to it on Saturday, do the test. Check the grounds- again. When I installed the yellow and bllue wires on the relay, I had them bckwards at first- blue on the bottom, then corrected them. Did I fry the relay by doing this?

Peterman,

I'll take a look at all the post in a few minutes,

Here are some helpful links for you too! I'm sorry the 68 help and repair manual is not up and running right now on our site. It is being revised but I'll see if I can get it finished today or tomorrow morning.

Just for me though, take a ground wire and hook it to the over-ride switch in the dash and run it to good known ground. Test the wipers again.

Thanks Ernie. I'll do the bench test on Saturday. I am concerned that since the brown wire is always hot (12 V), that I fried the new motor somehow.

The 68 help and repair page for the wiper motors has been revised to include a few more tidbits of info. It now includes the updates wire schematic! This file will be replaced soon.. maybe tomorrow with one that I'm still working on... But it will help you too.

Go to this page: http://willcoxcorvette.com/repairand...lp.php?hID=329

Click on Supporting Documentation.

Now.. where is DZ... we got shmoky... (Hey shmoky) fired up so you are in good hands...

Edit: In the second video go to the 5.20 mark.. "click" Now there is only two things that will cause this... One is the situation presented in the video and the other is the over-ride switch not being grounded.

Where is DZ.. I passed this 68 torch to him and Shmoky.. (and for a reason)

You don't need to remove the motor to test it.. just remove the bell crank nut off the linkage... and then remove "ALL" wires from the motor. Follow the instructions on how to bench test with the motor still installed in the car. I can not say how important it is to make sure all the harness connections are removed too.

Then.. with jumpers perform the bench test while the motor is on the car.

I've barely got time to pop in and read through the forums right now, remodeling and spring cleaning is keeping my busy.
I'll try to make some time soon to see if I can be of any help.

I'm out of town for the weekend but will try to keep up on this thread.

I'm doing fine rick. Healing up fine after surgery. Had a fantastic holiday and bought a 2008 GMC 2500HD diesel so am doing LOTS of research on that as I have never owned a diesel before.

Will check in again later if I can.
