Default Carb gasket sucked!

About an inch and a half of my carb gasket just got sucked down my intake.

Took the carb off and the gasket is long gone.

It is a thin paper gasket.

What kind of trouble am I in?

Please tell me that it will just burn away.

My guess is it's stuck in an intake runner and probably hasn't made it to a valve yet. I should point out that I do not believe it will even make it past a valve and into the combustion chamber. I think it will catch at the valve and if it's going to cause a problem that's where it'll go. It won't fix itself and I highly recommend you look into it further. You can try a scope to see if you can locate it and maybe grab it with a flexible tool of some kind. Just a chance but you might also be able to connect compressed air to the cylinder you determine it to be closest to and turn the crank till that intake valve is open and try and blow it back up.

You could also use a shop vacuum. Empty it out, first, and that way you'll be able to check the tank to see if you've retrieved the gasket piece. Good luck.

That is a good point. Thanks, I feel somewhat better.

The engine was making an odd sound so I shut it off.

Noticing gas around the base of the carb, and knowing that I just put the gasket on there, I suspected a vacuum leak.

I was surprised that the gasket, (Mr. Gasket)once fuel soaked, almost looked like toilet paper.

I suspect the strange sound was air sucking past the jammed valve.

Looks like I have a new project for tomorrow.

Surely I'm not the first person to have this happen.

Tried the vacuum idea, but other than learning a bit about the effects of carbon monoxide in an enclosed space, I failed.

I opted for a 200mph leaf blower set to vacuum. If it was gonna pull out, That should have done it.

It may be pinched in an intake valve.

Waiting for daylight. Too many large bugs out tonight.

Relax. A bit of paper will simply burn away. 99.999999999999% chance it's already long gone.

Think of the amount of vacuum it took to rip the gasket and then suck the torn bit it in. It's already toast.

Yay Mike! I was thinking the same, but then doubted myself until I read your post.

I would think that if it was soft enough to have torn out like that, it just went through the engine and might be stuck in a muffler or something. My brother is a motorcycle mechanic, and he has shown me several times how a 4 stroke motor cycle engine will suck a piece of tissue paper in through the carb and spit it out the tailpipe, unharmed, to demonstrate how fast things happen inside the combustion chamber. I would replace the gasket, (I wouldn't use a cheap-*** Mr. Gasket gasket, though, go get a roll of nice thick fel-pro gasket material and cut your own gasket) and run it.

I lost a chunk of the big black spacer next to the gasket a year or so ago and no problem never retrieved it but it did make for one Hell of a vacuum leak.

I'd be more concerned about why that part of the gasket wasn't clamped down. Is the carb flange warped or is the manifold gasket surface not flat?

Yeah, I think that's the real issue here.

Problem solved!

I just put the original 1/2 inch gasket back on, and it fired right up.

It was still making a "high moan" noise, but I took the car for a short brisk drive, and when I got back the noise was gone.

Thanks for the advice guys!

It seems that the 1/2 inch gasket that comes with the new Summit carb is vital because after checking, There is a "bump" under the front of the carb that doesn't allow it to seat where it mounts to my manifold with thin gaskets.

I'm lucky I didn't break the carb when I torqued it down, because there was a substantial gap at the front it seems.

All is well now. I just need to find another way to gain a little clearance.
