Default 68 top outside grill mounting brackets?

I have installed 3 of the 4 brackets that hold the grills. And those grill holes match up. But I cannot figure our how the 4th bracket attaches to the car. Specifically it is the top outside one. It is just a little bracket and when I align it with the grill hole, it doesn't come close to being able to mount anywhere. I assume it is supposed to mount to the nose bar? But how? Any help would be appreciated, especially pictures.

thanks in advance.

Sounds like it is time to buy an assembly manual!

Yea because mine is worn and dirty from use. It does not show enough detail for this particular thing.

I think it attaches to the headlight housing.

68s are weird and may have also had running changes. Manual might not be correct either.

From old parts book.

I tried that too but no luck. But you could still be right. I can easily make a second bracket to attach to it but I just thought I would try to figure out the way it is supposed to be.

This is helpful because it shows the part, number 1 in this diagram, and it's orientation. So that takes a way a lot of the mystery and confirms that I probably have the right part also. Now the #2 part doesn't even come close to represent my parts. Also if I may say these brackets are flimsy and an overall poor design for the purpose. No wonder they changed it for 69.

This was probably an early release drawing, and changes were likely made during the year.

This is the same reference I was using out of the manual. I understand what your saying but I have a new nose bar. Maybe it isn't the correct one but I don't see any vertical surfaces on the nose bar to screw this to.

Mike, the bracket attaches to the back of the head light support in the same spot as the 69 one piece bracket does. The bolt is a machine bolt, not a screw. You are lucky,my new inner, lower brackets did not fit to the grille! And they cost mega bucks. I need to call about them to the vender. My late March 68 had the same long inner, upper brackets as the AIM but rusted into nothingness. Lou.

I am sorry, the AIM is not showing the #2 support. It is in the parts book diagram.

Hi i just read your post. I just installed the number 1 bracket on my 68 last sat. There is a small screw hole just inside of the outer bumper bracket. It is on the nose header. Mine was a basket case i spent hours on it .im missing the number 9 brackets. I just can't see paying 70.00 each for them right now. Rich

Rich Patera, Like my above posting states, the small 68 upper bracket screws into the same exact threaded hole on the flat, back side of the headlight support, that the larger one piece 69 bracket does. It does not attach directly to the nose header bar. If you look closely at the AIM, there is a reference to headlamp opening support.
Also the new reproduction #2 brackets are shorter and attach in the same hole as the 69 inner, one piece grill brackets do, on top. These are the numbers in the parts book, not the AIM. Lou.
