Which are better valve covers for not leaking? My heads will take both center bolt and the ones on the outside? Seem to be more options for outside bolt down.
I've had both types and never had an issue with leaking. Felpro gasket always worked. I have center bolt now with a new crate but I like the outside bolt pattern myself.

I don't think it's the bolt pattern as much as I think it is the design of the cover. The thin stamped covers seem to leak no matter what. They just get bent and distorted way to easy and then getting them to seal can be tough. The thicker cast aluminum and alloy and fabricated covers seem a lot more sturdy and take well to both center bolt and perimeter bolt cover patterns.
I use permatex gasket maker with gaskets on my stock covers. Put a thin bead between the cover and gasket and between the gasket and head. Be sure to clean the covers and head surfaces with a good solvent. Put them on, align with bolts but do not tighten. Let cure overnight. Then gently tighten down.
The felpro rubber over steel gaskets come with longer spreaders too. I use them.
