Installed one of those cheapie HEI tach-drive distributors yesterday. (replacing a single point non-tach drive unit)
This is what it looks like installed with the engine off. The black mark I made on the body is the center on the #1 terminal on the cap. Timing pointer is at TDC. The pic angle is a little deceiving - in fact the rotor and the mark are closer to aligned.
Is this correct? The reason I ask is that if I manually advance the rotor to full mechanical advance it seems to be getting a bit too close to the next cylinder. However with only 13 teeth on the dist. gear, I can't see anywhere else it could really be?
Thanks! -W

Actually the springs feel pretty light - but for NOW I just wanna get it timed OK for regular pump gas - I can play with the timing curve after I do 50 other "must so" things to the old beast. THANKS!
if you're having trouble getting the distributor housing to rotate far enough to line that mark up, pick the post either before or after that one and make it #1. neither your distributor or engine will know the difference and you will be able to adjust timing. an hei and the points dist. are usually one cap post different from each other. If I remember right that happened when they went from points to hei, hope this helps.

It's already indexed "one off" to make the tach drive cable straight.
