There is a hose from the front / drivers side of the carb that goes to the vapor canister in the drivers side wheel well.. My hose is split and flimsy..Almost seems like it melted.. Is this a special hose? Special fittings on the canister side? I couldn't see in there too well but it looked like more than just a hose clamp holding it to the canister. Anyone every replace this?
There's just a hose clamp holding the hose to the canister--no special fitting. Not sure if a special kind of hose is required; I just replaced it by a fuel hose.
I have 5 hoses connecting to the canister. A set of two and a set of three. One in the set of two is the one I need to replace. There is some sort of connector at the canister but not easy to work with because of the window washer reservour being in the way. One in the three hose group had a hose clamp but everything else had a connector of some type. I tried to pull the hose out of the connector but it didn't budge. Not sure how to remove it..
Koz,I am having difficulty identifying exactly where the hoses go from the canistor on my 79.Can you post a picture or at least tell me where each hose goes to.Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Neil.

Ditto for an '81!
Koz, I pulled a couple of my hoses off the cannister. Do you have any TVS's fitted on your thermostat housing? If so, the hoses to the TVS end up in some sort of molded rubber connector, which is exactly the setup that the hoses had on my cannister. If I can't get them apart I was planning on just running separate hoses to the cannister & using hose clips.

I have to go look but the rubber molded connectors is what I have at the canister. I tried to pull them a part but no good. I was thinking about cutting it back about 6" from the canister and getting a hose connector to join up new hose to the canister. Don't know if they sell connectors like that but I'm going to look first. I don't know how you would connect a hose. I couldn't figure out how to get the molded connector off of the canister.
Anyone out there ever work on their canisters? Help..
The hoses need to be fuel hoses, there are steel (plastic will get eaten by the fuel) hose splice kits available...hopefully at your local parts store. The rubber connectors have an internal lip to hold them in...just pull on them and wiggle them to get them out. If you "do away" with the canister then you will get some strong fuel odors in your garage.
Thanks.. I'll give it a closer look. I don't want to get rid of the canister. Just when bubba put electrical tape to cover a tear in the hose the heat melted the tape and I found it by accident. The rest of the hose is flims.. Want to make it right. I'll either try to get the hose out of the connector or just buy a 3/8 splicer and some gas line hose.. Thanks!
Koz,
You might have fixed it by now, but if you haven't:
I pulled my cannister off the car last night. Once all the crud has been cleaned off you'll be able to see the labels on it - every connector is marked with what it connects to eg, control vac, fuel tank, carb bowl, etc.
According to my parts supplier the '81 is different to previous years  & the part I want isn't listed (so I either remove the cannister or consult with Bubba). I think the only difference is that mine has a connection to the air filter housing. The valves are apparently the same, so if you look at the valve that the hose goes to there will be a 3/16" hose connected to the top of it. If you pull off the rubber connector & hoses you will be able to connect a 3/8" & a 3/16" hose directly to the fittings on the valve & run them to where the originals went.
The only reasons that I can see for the rubber connector thing is to prevent people mixing the hoses up, or it may be there to stop the top of the valve rotating (it's just a snap fit), so maybe a tie-wrap arround the hoses at the valve would be a good idea (hey, call me Bubba!).
Thanks UKPaul!
Were you able to just slide off the rubber connector from the canister or did you have to cut it off. I pulled on it a bit but it didn't budge. I didn't want to force it until I had more time to play with it.
Dr Rebuild sells the hose kit with a diagram. I replace my set when I replaced the vapor canister (also from the good Dr). About $100 for hose kit and canister).
Koz,
It does slide off - but at 1st it feels like it's been welded on. I hit it with some WD40 & gave it a few mins to soak in. After a bit of a "wiggle" it loosened up enough to pull off. If you want I could post a pic of the top of the cannister tomorrow so you can see what it looks like.
I took the plastic grille out of the fender next to the cannister (did I ever regret doing that, I was reminded how badly the car had been re-painted when huge flakes of paint landed at my feet :( ). Once it's out you can get your hand in there enough to grab the connector enough to "wiggle" it. While you are pulling the connector keep the top of the valve pressed down as it's only a snap fit. It probably won't pop out, but if something can go wrong it usually does ;)
Thanks again. I was looking at that grill wondering if it would be the easier way to access this thing.. Now I think I'll try from the top instead.. :D If it does by chance pop out.. does it just pop back in?
Why would someone need to change the canister? Unless of course they were trying to replace the hoses and busted off the valve..  Zip sells a replacement filter for about $4.00.. I would assume it needs replacement when you start smelling gas fumes?
Koz,
If the valve top pops off then it just pops back on. BUT (it's never easy ;) ) there will probably be a layer of crud on the cap which will fall inside the valve & cause a bad seal (my problem - & it causes a really annoying hesitation just off idle). Getting the cap back on is easy - just push it on. All that's inside is a rubber diaphram (which isn't listed seperately for an '81? :mad ), a spring & a little plastic seat for the spring (to stop it punching through the diaphram). If the cap pops off then you'd probably need to remove the cannister to clean it up & pop it back on. Removal isn't difficult - once you've worked out the shortcuts!
I'm not sure about when it's due replacement. I think the charcoal turns to dust over a long period (can't it just be filled with BBQ charcoal? :jester ). Mine smells of fuel but the purge hose wasn't connected up!
I wouldn't worry about removing the grille if you find that doing it from the top gets awkward. My problem was a bad paintjob, in that the paint is really thick on the top of the car but really thin & flaky on the bottom (even the cannister had a layer of white paint on it.... & it was stuck better than the paint on the bottom of the fenders :( ).
