Default MSD box on my HEI dist?

Not really sure what is happening but the car seems to eat coils! I had to have it towed back to my shop today and the culprite is a burned up coil. this makes 3 times it has done it. Do i need the MSD box on the car? It is a 383 stroker. 10.1:1

Not sure what MSD has to do with your problem. What make coil are you installing? Did you check your charging system to make sure you dont have a regulator that is putting out too much voltage?

Is it a real HEI, or a clone? Genuine HEI modules control (and limit) the coil current, and should be reasonably immune to system voltage issues. If there's a shunt/resistive short to ground (at the C-/TACH line)this would cause continued heating of the coil, and the module would still switch additional dwell current, causing the coil to get hot. Just curious, what's the C-/TACH voltage with the key on, and the engine not turning?

Not sure how you're car's wired, but put my share of MSD 6AL boxes on HEI dizzy cars, with no problems. The HEI dizzy modules are usually removed here, with only the magnetic trigger sensor still in use. Who knows, maybe the MSD box has gone haywire, but not likely. If not already, PM me an e-mail, and I'll send you out the MSD wiring information. Mark
