I was priming a new engine yesterday (Project Painintheass) in preparation to fire it up. I had the drill going a mile a minute and I got good oil up through the rockers on the passenger's side of the engine (cyls. 2,4,6,8) within a minute or two.
The driver's side, though, (cyls. 1,3,5,7) was a little different. I kept spinning the pump and spinning the pump and about the best I could get on that side was a little trickle out of both rockers on No. 7 and a slightly smaller trickle out of the intake on No. 5 (the three rearmost rockers on the driver's side.)
I don't want to start the engine in this condition and I can't think of an easy answer. (At least one that doesn't involve tearing the sumbeeyotch down again.)
Since you did'nt say,are you turning the crankshaft 180 degrees as you do this to line up the lifter ports and block oil passages? If not turn 180 and pump then turn another 180 and pump until you go through several revolutions and oil is flowing to the 1&3 rockers. They are the last ones to be fed I believe
LoL Bob
Yup. Rotating it while spinning with the drill and the modified distributor. It's just the left (driver's) side that doesn't seem to be getting oil. Or much, anyhow. It pours right out of the right side...
What are you using to turn the pump shaft? If your not using an old distributor body and shaft or an actual priming tool, the oil galley isn't complete and has a huge leak.
In other words the distributor body is part of the oil galley
Went home at lunch and pulled the valve covers to take a look. Started it just to have a look at the moving parts to see if anything was obviously effed up.
I'm getting good oil flow on both sides now.
Strange, expecially since I spent 15-20 minutes with a drill trying to prime it on Sunday. Now all I have to do is chase down and fix a funny little random banging/scraping/dinging noise and I'm all set.
