Default Heat Shields

1977 l48 auto.

I put long tube headers and duel exhaust on not too long ago.

I have seen some of the heat shields for the starters, but have read mixed reviews. Could I just wrap the exhaust with the exhaust wraps where it passes by the starter? Or even wrap the starter with the exhaust wraps? I do not want to replace the starter with the smaller quick start starters until this one goes out. Right now, the car is a no rain car since it is not complete yet. (water leaks, don't want to be stranded in the rain, etc)

Also, there is nothing between the floor and the exhaust. Where can I buy heat shields or do I need to fab up my own?

I will eventually do the heat barriers under the carpet, but I am not ready to tackle the interior yet.

Thanks.

I've had issues with my starter getting heat soaked too. I replaced the starter with stock unit and installed a 3-layer heat shield, but still have same issue -- starter will not turn over when hot. I'm planning to wrap with a heat blanket next then wrap headers in starter area if that does not work. I've also checked my grounds to make sure they were good.

EDIT: FYI . . . I have stainless headers

I bought a heat shield from Ecklers for my setup. The headers are close but I think the shield will do its job. I have not yet had a good hot long drive with the car since I got it back together.

I also have Jet Hot coated headers and that should help.

Hiya,
Get a mini-high torque starter and your hot start issues will be gone. It will save some weight, work better than stock, easier to remove, easier to install than taking out your header and wrapping it AND looks pretty cool.

i have header wrap and a wrap on the starter. it has solved the heat soak problem for me.
one day when i get ambitious i would like to install the zero clearance mat almost everywhere to keep the cabin cooler.

Could I just use the header wrap to wrap the starter also?

At some point I will put the mini starter on, but I do not see the point right now since my starter works. I have not had a hot start problem yet since I really don't drive it more than a few miles away from the house. But I would rather be safe than sorry.

Taylorbg,
I read "starter" in your original post and completely spaced on your question about heat shielding. I just did this recently.

The product is made by DEI and it's quality stuff. You will need tin snips and gloves. The aluminum WILL cut you. This is a link to Jegs, but you can get a better price on Ebay. That's where I got mine. Pics below....

I'm using this one. I couldn't install it with the starter on the car. I had to hammer at the bottom corner near the headers to get it to fit. But once on, it works just fine.
