Default Will cutouts "burn up" valves?

Hey, planning my exhaust right now, and I was thinking about electric cutouts. My dad was saying running open headers risks damaging the valves. How much of a difference will cutouts make vs open headers.

Is this true? Why does it happen? Is there a way to run electric cutouts without damaging valves.

Thanks.

Open cutouts or open headers will not damage your valves. Plenty of dedicated race cars run open headers all the time with no damage.

I would think it would depend on how LEAN the engine gets when they are open. Something I would check....

Tghter timing curve, a little more initial, and fatten up the carb a little to compensate for less restricvtive exhaust. Proper tuning is needed any time you make a change. Best done on a dyno.

\If your exhaust system is sized right well you probably wont notice any difference except volume.

I was actually talking to Gere Stahl about headers. He recommended using 'drag pipes' to get the most out of my motor.

So if I have my car tuned for a full exhaust, and I open the cutouts it will run lean.

What if I have the car tuned for open headers/cutouts and then close the cutouts will it run rich and bog on me?

Is there any in between to have the car running good when cutouts are either open or closed?

Thanks.

Timing is most important. If your running an ignition box you can get a timing control box like this.

You will only need a couple degrees advance with cutouts operational. I have one for my nitrous that retards timing when the nitrous is activated.

I actually dont think you will see much of a difference and I dont think you will burn your valves with cutouts. If you placed them up close to the engine , yes , probably an issue, but you're probably goin to place them back in front of the mufflers so you will be basicly be converting from muffler to 'no' mufflers , but instead of laying on your back and doing it you're doing it with an electric switch. people do that all the time with out changing the tune. However, 63 mako says it best and has the best solution...imho

probably little difference in performance if you have a good, propely sized system.

I see. Maybe it is not worth the trouble, or cost then. It sounds so good though!

The basis for what your father said may have to do with running the engine with an almost non-existent exhaust system, like zoomies, so that the hot exhaust valves are suddenly hit by cold air when the engine is shut off and that causes them to warp. I have heard of this before, from an aircraft mechanic, but don't think that it would be an issue if you had the cut-outs back by the rear tires. Whether it's true or not, the concept is based on repetitive thermal shock, not mixture. No doubt the engine leans out if the exhaust system backpressure changes, but I think it may be the thermal thing that was being talked about.
