I'm rebuilding the parking brake and it was a joy to remove the springs, shoes, and that dreaded pin that goes in middle of the spring. But to put the spring, cap and shoes back on is the most agrivating thing I have ever done. Every time I line up the shoes and try to get the cap positioned on the spring the $#*&% pin slips in. There is just no way to do this. Please, please does anyone know of any tricks or tools to complete a park brake restore? Any help or pics would be a blessing. Thanks.
there should be a SEARCH for parking break installs, you use fishing line to help hold everything together, then cut the line to get it out of the way. String will work too.
compress the springs /cap in a vise, i tied mine while collapsed with dental floss. installed the spring on the pin, then burned the floss with a lighter and it popped into place.
Compressing the spring/cap and tying it with the floss sounds like a good idea if it's on the car
Mine were on the bench so.....
Don't have anything else on (springs, adjuster etc)
you can wedge a rag tight behind the one pin (the one that doesn't come out) pack it in tightly and it will hold the pin out while you fuss with the front
The other pin you can reach (sort of) and keep a finger on to hold it
I pulled the show out sideways as far as possible, put the spring on then the cap, (here's where it being on the bench was so nice) and then using pliers pushed the cap in, grabbed the pin and turned the pin rather than trying to turn the cap
Did mine with needle nose pliers and a healthy supply of curse words. Pretty sure my neighbors think I have tourettes.
That was the same technique I used, and by the end, I was starting to think I had touretts!! I was making up new curse words, because the old ones just weren't working as well for me anymore!
