Dang it, wouldn't you know it I have to park it right when I get her running good :(. Whenever I started her up today the tach wasn't working. I shut her down and found one of the wires busted off of the tach filter. Pulled out the soldering gun and soldered it back on. I took her out for a spin today, I did what I always do, I pulled off up at my old school and checked out the engine for leaks etc... The water pump bit the dust, she's leaking water out of the weep hole. I also found out where my oil leak is coming from. The rubber gasket at the rear of my intake manifold squeezed out and was dripping fairly decent amount of oil.
Now I have to get a new water pump and intake gasket kit. While I'm at it, I think I'm going to get one of the following two intakes:
Weiand X-CELerator Single Plane $169
Holley Strip Dominator Single Plane $190
Will the L88 hood allow me to use either of these intakes without any hood clearance issues? I'll probably get a Moroso aluminum water pump. I'm bummed but I guess things could be worse.
Dont sweat it too much......Even brand new ships have problems on their shake down cruises.:yesnod:
It's better to find these little PITA issues around home than elsewhere. I had the same problem with my intake. I was advised to NOT use the rubber front and rear gaskets, but to use RTV. I dont know if this aplies to BB's, but everyone I spoke told me to leave out the rubber pieces. Mine is bone dry in that area.
I no longer use the front and rear rubber piece for intake gaskets. I put a large bead of silicon along the back and front rail of the block and carefully lower the intake in place. Make sure you clean the block rails and edge of manifold very well. I only finger tighten the bolts. I usually do this at night and then torque to specs (25 pounds) the next morning. The silicon seals very well and has never blown out of any engine I've done this with.
Well, you can't fly with the jets and not hit turbulence now and then... Horsepower costs $$$$$. I mean, If it has t@#S or tires it's going to cost you Money! :jester

Aw come on, you didn't actually think that your were done.
Just kidding, :jester
It normal to have some issues to fix, but like you said, time to mod already

A Holley Strip Dominator intake w/ L88 cold air box & hood fit my 67 w/o trouble. I assume it will also fit the shark L88 hood. Do you plan to run it w/ the full L88 fresh air assembly? It will be very tight with a 3" air filter and lid -- I wouldn't be surprised if this setup does in fact hit your hood. The full L88 fresh air setup actually seals the top of the air cleaner against the hood. Note that you will need the GM drop air cleaner base as this intake is taller than your Torker. The Strip Dominator is taller than the X-CELerator.
Agree with the other posters -- use a silicone bead in place of the end rail gaskets -- much more consistent sealing.
