I just completed replacing all the carpeting/ upper and lower shifter boots. Prior to bolting the lower boot back on I looked at the shifter linkage and did not see any lithium grease and it seemed rather free of lubricant. So I looked for the grease and all I had was 80/90 rear end grease so I squirted some on the shifter. Now it is hard to find 1st and 2nd. Before it was a little sloppy but
you could bang the hell out of the gears. Now I have to jam the gears in and find myself missing 2nd half the time (it's like the gate between 2nd and forth is a thousandth of an inch from each other. When out of gear at a stop light I hit reverse by mistake all the time. The shifter was never adjusted just lubed and new seals put on it. Any ideas?
The lube might make it feel a little different, but it shouldn't make it shift different. Some how it's got out of adjustment. Now you know what you can do over the long week-end.
Actually you shouldn't use any lubricant on the shift arms or linkage because it will attract dirt and dust and cause the shifter to not shift smoothly. I just put a new Hurst Comp. Plus shifter in my 74 and they recommended No lubricant be used. If you clean the linkage use brake cleaner and if you feel you need to lubricate it you should use a powdered graphite lube. This will lube the shifter but not attract and hold any debris.
