I'm about to remove rear rotors for re-surfacing/replacing. While I have them off, can I also remove the hub to rebuild the emergancy brake system? What else would I have to remove to do this job? Thanks in advance. L8TER, Paul.
You really don't want to mess with attempting to remove rear hub, if you do, you will be in for a ton of work, will need lot's of specialty tools, and will have to set up rear wheel bearing lash, and really should just install new rear wheel bearings at that time. Having said all that, it would be the best time for easiest parking brake repair / replacement, however parking brakes can be servied / replaced with hub on the car. Suggest you get the special tool to aid in this job, I didn't when I did mine, and did get the job done, but it was more difficult. I ended up taking a really long needle nose pliers, and grinding the outside down a bunch, so I could use the pliers inside the hole in the hub to help install the parking brake hold down springs.
Suggest you purchase and install the stainless steel parking brake hardware kit, and don't believe it's really necessary to install stainless steel brake shoes.
Just clean everything up really well, these things like to get rusty. It's kind of tedious working behind / around the hub to do this job, but it can be done, I did it.
John, Thanks for the info. I guess I'll cross that bridge after the rotors are off. Not sure If I'm gonna do the e-brakes, just wanted to basically have an idea of direction. And you have provided plenty direction. L8TER, Paul.
I found a nice little trick for those springs, I think it was at rowleycorvette.com.
You compress the springs in a vise and tie them down with dental floss.
On the car after you position the pin in place you can just burn the floss
off and they spring into place. Worked nice for me !
