I took the 69 out for a maiden voyage this morning. Just a quick cruise around town and a stop at the gas station.
Anyway, I stupidly put regular unleaded in the car. Now I've got a huge run on problem. This isn't just the old 'rumble rumble die' it's hard to get the engine to stop! Anyway, what's my best bet here? An additive?
Thanks!
Idle speed set too high or too much timing or (sometimes) shutting off the engine after a very short drive with the choke still engaged and the carb on "fast idle."
There are other things but these could be some places to start.
As space in the tank allows top off with higher octane. That might be all you need. As for additives I've heard so many positive/negative comments I don't know what to tell you on those.
I had the exact same thing happen last weekend with my '71. As soon as I filled up at a cheap gas station my car developed some dieseling. I attribute it to bad gas. High idle is usually the cause but it has not happened with my current set-up until I filled up with cheap gas.
To stop the run on just kill the engine while you are still in gear. I expect it to quit as soon as I get some good gas.
Unless your engine has been modified to a much lower compression than stock, it needs premium fuel. As already posted, idle rpm set too high will also cause run-on even with proper fuel. In any case, use premium instead of octane boosters + regular. The cost of octane boosters will be way more than the extra cost of premium. Who ever said that Corvettes were cheap to own? :)
Ya - I know. I don't know what I was thining pulling up to the wrong pump. After I use some, I'll go put some super high octane gas in there. I think there's one station in town that sells the good stuff at $2.50 a gallon.
