Default 400 small block timing

I have a 400 that I just built and put in my 79. I have been discussing with some of my gear head buddies the timing. I have an HEI distributor and am thinking of having the mechanical advance welded and just setting my timing where I want it. Had anyone done this or what are your thoughts on this? Thanks guys.

NO!! You need all three timing phases. Initial, mechanical and vacuum. To get your car to start your timing would probably be around 20 initial. You need initail plus mechanical of about 36. You would not have this advance. Then you need Vacuum to bump your total with vacuum to about 52 at low load cruise. A proper timing curve is the key to a well performing engine in all throttle and loading situations.
