I have a 1982 coupe and 1st gear (automatic transmission) is making a knocking sound. once it shifts to second ,it is fine. Is this common and can there be some adjustments? I found a small leak and was low on fluid. Topped it off and let idol a bit but still making noise. Any suggestions? I also heard the idol adjustment may just needed to be adjusted as i turned it up a bit because of stalling issues.no carb-fuel injected.

initially it made a knocking sound in reverse but was only slight. I had also noticed a clunking sound the last few days before initial problem when shifting . My thought that it was due to the higher idol adjustment.

sounds internal to me the low and reev roller clutch (sprag) works in low and rreverse the reverse clutches also ingage the early 700r4s had a weak roller clutch assembly trans will have to be removed abnd dissambiled to get to it if bad replace with a 1987 -up sprag and center support
