my 96 vette started doing the same thing @ a year after i bought it. i found that the pinion nut had worked its way loose. i removed it and cleaned the threads and installed it with loctite and it has been quiet ever since.
I marked the nut and the shaft, counted the turns and put it back together the same number and aligned the marks.
From your description it sounds like you did not get the companion flange nut back to its original position. That changes the pinion's position on the ring gear which causes your growling noise. Unless the noise is actually coming from a bad rear spindle bearing.
My Vette is doing the same thing- she growls while coming off the gas and coasting. I just got the car and have zero history on it. What do experienced guys recommend? As most guys are, I am on a budget and need to solve much of this myself.
