Default Engine wont shut down

Alright fellas and gals....

Here's the scenerio.... 1980, pretty well stock in every way. Car starts, with or without lights on, tach works....car shuts off with lights OFF, ....but when lights are ON, the car won't shut down and with the ignition switch to off the tach reads 3k or whatever it feels....

New ride and working out the bugs.... Is this some saftey thing as to not to leave your lights on.....??

Tim

not a safety , you seem to be backfeeding you ignition, thru the headlight switch. Do you know if its been replaced? Its usually due to reversing the hot and ground ...somewhere. there's other things that can cause it , but thats the simplest.

Thanks, I'll switch out the switch... It's a bit "smooth" " can't really feel the click, click.... It must be feeding 12v back to the ignition..... Still kinda a good way not to leave your lights on.... although you might leave the engine running....LOL...

Try removing the "gauges" and "backup light" fuses and see if that allows the engine to turn off.

On the later C3s GM uses the "bat" and "ign" taps on the fuse box to power up certain accessory's.
My guess and it is just a guess, that one of the taps involving the parking lights that is supposed to be inserted in a buzzer has been inserted in an ign tap and is backfeeding feeding the ign circuit when the parking lights are on. The plugs usually don't allow this but you never know. This would be the simplest way I can think of. It could be something much worse , like a melted wire into the ign circuit.
Hopefully its something simple.
