Default Ignition problems on my 79

Bought a 79 last fall. It's been off the road for over 10 years.Been running fine with minor problems that I fixed over the winter.Went on a long road trip on warm day last week. After I got back the car had a hard time starting until it broke down.I found a huge burn whole through the center of distributor cap to the coil.Looks like there was no round insulator under the coil unless it just melted away. The burnt cap and rotor were new,the burnt coil could have been original. After replaceing cap, rotor, ignition coil and module it sounds like it wants to start. Like there are only two or three plugs firing.Checked all my connections three times. The cap and rotor replacements were used but in good shape.Coil and module are brand new.I'm obsessing on this problem. Any advice?

pull the plugs and see what they look like, if you fried the other parts, may have fried plugs and wires also.

cap and rotor used parts. HEI's are bad about burning the contacts and rotor tip. make sure the coil has a ground and that you have at least 12 volts to the unit., check the timing.

Thanks.Replaced the plugs and she fired up.Didnt think I would have to since they were new.Not so much new anymore.Bad news is there was no tach filter so I think it blew the tach because now its not working.I'll check the connections first then order one if i have to.
I think the problem was no rubber insulator under the coil, unless it disentegrated.Found a burn hole the size of a quarter under the coil.
